Traffex 2015: CIHT launches new guidance and membership offer

Newly released urban design guidance will be promoted by leading professional body the Chartered Institution of Highways and Transportation (CIHT) at Traffex 2015, along with a new membership offer for apprentices.

Suitable for all apprentices embarking on a career in highways and transportation, CIHT’s new membership grade is free of charge to those eligible and follows a major push to boost apprenticeship numbers in the sector.

Sue Percy, CIHT chief executive said: ‘We are delighted to add the apprenticeship grade into our membership offer. This is an important step for CIHT as we have been working with government and our sector to highlight the role that apprentices will play now and in the future for the UK.

‘Apprenticeships are a great way to learn new skills, gain valuable work experience and become qualified all whilst earning a wage.’

Partnering the event with the Department for Transport, Highways England and ITS, CIHT is also promoting the latest in a range of guidelines that update the Transport in the Urban Environment series.

Exploring the latest developments around walking and the development of successful places in the urban environment, the guidelines are also available to download free from the CIHT website.

Andrew Hugill, director of policy and technical affairs said: ‘We have produced these new guidelines to provide practical advice and highlight good practice that is available in the highways and transportation sector.

‘Planning for Walking - describes the characteristics of pedestrian journeys, lists the benefits of walking, identifies factors that discourage walking and how they can be overcome, summarises the legal framework that applies to pedestrians and outlines the way that plans and strategies for pedestrian travel are developed.

‘Designing for Walking - explains how facilities for walking should be designed. Well-designed facilities that follow desire lines, are clutter-free, and are legible to all users will assist in enabling walking journeys and improve the experience of those already walking.’

Traffex and Parkex returns to Hall 5 at the NEC Birmingham on the 21 - 23 April, 2015.
