Sloane square crossroads hit the buffers

Kensington and Chelsea Council’s plans to replace the gyratory system at Sloane Square with crossroads have gone to public consultation.
The council plans to re-link Sloane Street and Lower Sloane Street so that traffic flows across the square instead of around a central island. ‘The central island is dead space at the heart of Sloane Square and shouldn’t be returned to public use,’ said
Daniel Moylan, deputy leader of Kensington and Chelsea Council. ‘The square was a crossroads until the 1930s and changing the layout will liberate 50% more public space – the equivalent of five tennis courts.’ However, the scheme has run into local opposition, and a rival scheme has been proposed which retains the current traffic layout but with wider pavements, a shared surface at junctions, improved lighting and more planting and hedgerows (Surveyor 18 January 2007). The consultation ends on 29 March.
