Yellow school bus review begins

US-style buses could be introduced across the UK
Bus operator First Group has launched a consultation into a new system of school travel using US style yellow buses.

The group, which has bought the US greyhound franchise and this week announced soaring profits, is seeking feedback and findings from parents, teachers, children and other stakeholders to inform the commission’s report which will be published next year.

The Yellow School Bus Commission, headed up by former minister David Blunkett, also has representatives from local authorities and the Department for Transport.

It will try to quantify the benefits and look at the US system, together with similar programmes already being operated in the UK. The Commission will also examine ways of increasing the uptake across the UK.

The Commission, which is expected to report in Spring 2008, was set up following preliminary independent research of around 1,500 parents carried out earlier this year. This, First says, clearly indicated that parents are seeking an alternative solution for the school run.

The research showed 38.7% of primary school children and 21% of secondary school children get to school by car – more than three times more than their parents’ generation.

It also said 86% of parents would be willing to send their children to school on a dedicated school bus, with the main benefits listed as congestion and carbon reduction (51.1%), and peace of mind knowing children are safe (34.4%).

Just under two-thirds said such services should be funded through a mixture of parental contribution, local and national government spending.
