'Whole nation' suggests names for council's gritting machine

Oldham Council has been inundated with suggestions after it invited local children to name its new gritter.

The council launched a competition asking children that live in the town or attend a local primary school to suggest a name for its new gritting machine.

In a similar vein to the Natural Environment Research Council competition earlier this year, Gritney Spears, Gritty Gritty Bang Bang and Usain Salt are just some of the names put forward.

The name Gritty McGritface has also been a front-runner in homage to Boaty McBoatface.

The council’s cabinet member for environment services, Cllr Fida Hussain, said: 'We're delighted with how well our competition has taken off. It's not only captured the imagination of Oldham residents but the whole nation.

'We ran a similar competition a few years ago which was also really well received but this time I think we've taken it up a notch.

'On a single Tweet more than 70,000 people have engaged with us in one way or another and some of the suggestions so far have been fantastic.'
