Three-fold increase in London road deaths sparks police action

A three-fold increase in road fatalities in London has seen hundreds of officers from Scotland Yard take to the streets to re-launch its highways safety scheme.

Operation Safeway will see more than 600 officers deployed at 166 key junctions, focussing on people committing traffic offences including speeding, using mobile phones while driving, not wearing a seat belts or driving a vehicle with a defect.

The action comes after 29 people have been killed since the start of the year on the capital’s roads compared to 10 across 2014.

Supt Robert Revill said: 'We are committed to road safety and must do everything in our power to influence road user behaviour.

'Every road death or serious injury is a needless tragedy. We must reverse this trend.'

The police action will continue for six weeks.

When Operation Safeway was first launch in November 2013, it saw close to 14,000 drivers and cyclists fined.
