TfL prepared for Night Tube launch this weekend

Preparations for the launch of the Night Tube this weekend are in place, with Transport for London (TfL) investing in extra police, extra 24-hour bus routes and updating its open data feeds for journey planning apps.

TfL has announced it is investing an extra £3.4m towards policing for the Night Tube, which will see around ‘100 officers on the network when full services are underway, with at least as many officers out during the night as would be seen during the day’.

It has also confirmed that all stations will be staffed throughout the night, ensuring passengers always have someone to speak to if they need help.

From this weekend 19 and 20 August, the first two Underground lines, Victoria and Central, start operating Night Tube services at 51 stations, with services on the Jubilee, Northern and Piccadilly lines following on Friday and Saturday nights in the autumn.

The Central line will run a reduced service between Ealing Broadway and Loughton/Hainault, while the entirety of the Victoria line will stay open. Trains will run every 10 minutes on average.

Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, said the Night Tube service would support around 2,000 permanent jobs and boost London's economy by £360m.

'Keeping Londoners safe is my number-one priority. The extra investment in British Transport Police officers will ensure that all Londoners using the Night Tube feel safe, whether getting back from work or going out at the weekend with friends,’ he added.

'Passengers on the Night Tube must be able to travel with the same confidence they are used to during the day. That's why we're investing £3.4m to ensure that dedicated officers are on hand to offer the support and visible reassurance Londoners expect.'

TfL has also updated its open data Application Program Interface for travel apps. The data, available free of charge at tfl.gov.uk/developers, now contains the planned journey timetables for Night Tube services on the Central and Victoria lines and will be updated as further services open up.

The API contains live travel information on buses, river bus services and Trams, accessibility and car park information for all TfL stations and live travel information on the status of roads.

There will also be additional bus routes to support onward journeys from the Night Tube.

The following bus routes will have 24-hour services for the first time:

  • 34 (Barnet Church to Walthamstow Central)
  • 123 (Ilford High Road to Wood Green)
  • 145 (Leytonstone to Dagenham)
  • 158 (Stratford to Chingford Mount)
  • 296 (Ilford Broadway to Romford)
  • E1 (Greenford Broadway to Ealing Broadway)
  • W3 (Finsbury Park to Northumberland Park)
  • W7 (Finsbury Park to Muswell Hill Broadway).
