Temporary causeway leads to early finish for Devon bypass

The Barnstable Bypass in north Devon is on course to open two months early, due to the construction of a temporary causeway.
The £42M scheme, designed to ease congestion by more than 40% on some local routes, is now set to open by next Easter.
David Upritchard, project manager at contractor Edmund Nuttall, said the temporary causeway was key to the bypass’ success and instrumental in ‘securing the project for us’ in the first place. It enabled work to be carried out more quickly and prevented construction traffic having to travel through the town.
The bypass is one of the biggest civil engineering projects by Devon County Council in recent years. The 2.7km highway will lie on the western side of Barnstable, linking the A3612 Braunton Road with the A39 Atlantic Highway.
