Sunny side of parking comes to Hampshire and Havant

Solar powered parking meters that give residents the chance to choose coin, card or contactless payments, are being installed in East Hampshire and Havant this week.

Local district and borough councils plan to complete the installation of more than 70 chip and pin Parkeon pay and display machines.

East Hampshire will have 25 new meters across Alton and Petersfield and 46 machines will be put in place across car parks in Havant. Residents will be charged a 22p handling fee per debit/credit payments.

The new smart meters will also support data-gathering, helping the councils analyse parking trends and usage.

Richard Millard, East Hampshire District Council's (EHDC) portfolio holder for commercial contracts, said: 'The new meters will make parking in council-owned car parks much quicker and easier - ensuring we give people the best and easiest experience whether they are out shopping, on a business trip or visiting as tourists.'

Cllr Tony Briggs, Havant Borough Council (HBC) deputy leader, said: 'These modern, up-to-date meters are great because they allow people to pay in a variety of ways, using cash or card, and mean that residents won’t need to rifle through their pockets looking for change to park in our car parks.'
