Southend set to double transport spend

Southend-on-Sea BC is to spend £15m on transport projects - double last year's total - it has announced.

The council said it planned to spend cash on the Southend Airport roundabout, and an extension to the seafront cycle pathway.

It also aimed to put an additional £1.16m on bus routes and £2.6m into highways maintenance for the year 2013/14.

Cllr Tony Cox, cabinet member for transport, told a local paper: 'There is a vast amount of money being spent on roads, infrastructure and making public transport more attractive.

'It should give assurances to the public that we are doing quite a lot with the money.'
