South Yorkshire moves forward on smartcards

Smartcard tickets are now being sold on buses and trams in South Yorkshire.

Passengers buying some weekly tickets can use their smartcard, or will be given one for the first time by their driver or conductor, instead of a paper pass.

Smartcard users can also buy one-day tickets across South Yorkshire on most buses and trams.

South Yorkshire Passenger Transport Executive (SYPTE) said its smartcard scheme aims to change how passengers pay for public transport, make it easier to get around and speed up boarding times.

Most buses in South Yorkshire are fitted with ticket machines with card-readers that scan smartcards, while tram conductors use hand-held devices.

SYPTE said ‘ticket counterparts will be provided to enable smartcards to be accepted on trains where appropriate’.

It said work is underway to expand the range of smart tickets on sale and to allow multi-operator tickets to be loaded onto smartcards online and that smartcards will eventually be able to be used on all modes of public transport.
