Road worker dies after being hit by resurfacing truck

 

A local authority road worker has died after being hit by a truck carrying out resurfacing work.

The incident happened on Calderwood Road, East Kilbride on Saturday afternoon.

Police Scotland said a male road worker was hit by a truck that was also involved in the road repairs.

Reports said firefighters and an air ambulance attended, although the man sadly died at the scene. No-one else was injured.

A Police Scotland spokesman said : ‘The Health & Safety Executive and South Lanarkshire Roads Dept have been informed.

‘A full investigation into the circumstances of the incident is now underway. A report will be sent to the Procurator Fiscal.’

South Lanarkshire council confirmed that the man was one of its employees.

Michael McGlynn, executive director of community and enterprise resources, said: ‘Our thoughts are with all of our colleagues who were involved in this tragedy, and especially with the family of the colleague who has so sadly died as a result of it.

‘It would be inappropriate to comment further at this time, but we will be working closely with Police Scotland and others to investigate this incident.’
