Planned Tube strike to shut down Zone 1

Tube station staff plan to strike for 24 hours from 6pm on Sunday 8 January, in a move that would shut down the majority of Underground stations in Zone 1.

If the strike goes ahead services will be severely disrupted until the end of service on Monday 9 January. Normal services are expected to resume by the morning of Tuesday 10 January.

Transport for London (TfL) said it expected no service on the whole of the Victoria line, the North Acton to West Ruislip branch of the Central line, the Waterloo and City line and the Piccadilly line serving Heathrow terminals 4 & 5.

The RMT union said the strike was the result of 838 job cuts 'that have left stations without sufficient staff to operate safely and effectively'.

It added that the tube is reliant on staff working overtime on rest days and claimed that an overtime ban by station staff led to over 80 station closures in just over a month.

The union said this proved too many jobs were cut.

RMT general secretary Mick Cash, added: 'Despite huge efforts by the union negotiating team London Underground have failed to come up with any serious plans to tackle the staffing and safety crisis caused by the axing of nearly 900 safety-critical station jobs.

'As a result of the management failure to face up to the current crisis the talks have collapsed and all industrial actions remains on.'
