Nottingham’s city centre will be divided into five colour-coded zones, which will be illustrated on road signs to help cut congestion and parking queues.
Over coming months the ‘Park-Smart’ zone symbols will be incorporated on to new road signs, so motorists can easily recognise which zone they are approaching or are in. The zones – Royal, Castle, Broadmarsh, Lace Market and Victoria – will reflect the individual character of each area.
In addition, interactive signs will show up-to-the-minute information on parking spaces. If the nearest car park is full, the signs will point the motorist in the direction of the nearest car park which has availability.
Linked to ParkSmart is the Nottingham navigator project, aimed at helping pedestrians find their way around the city.
The 29 navigator units throughout the city will show which zone they are currently in, highlight nearby points of interest such as tourist attractions, leisure and retail offers, as well as historical information about the surrounding area.
Cllr Jane Urquhart, portfolio holder for transport and area working at Nottingham City Council, said; ‘Through the ParkSmart and Nottingham navigator projects, Nottingham will be the first city in the UK to integrate pedestrian and parking signing.’
The first ParkSmart road signs are a mixture of directional signs, car park information signs and tourist information signs, and were installed last week. The electronic signs will be rolled out from the end of July. The whole scheme is expected to be launched by the end of October.
