New car prices do not travel well, research shows

Data on the price of new cars across Britain shows variations of up to £7,000 on the cost of popular models.

Working with the Ixplor car accessory website, researchers took data from sources like AutoTraders, Cargurus and Carwow to find the best place to buy a Volkswagen Golf S 1.6 or a Nissan Qashqai 1.3.

According to the data, the most expensive place to buy a VW Golf S 1.6 is Brighton at £22,697.50, while the cheapest location for purchasing the same model is Hull at £15,666.67 – a price difference of just over 7,000.

While many of the more expensive places to buy the Golf are in the South of England and its South Coast, evidence of a North/South divide is far from uniform. Buying the model in Leeds will set you back £20,831.79, slightly more than the 20,083.33 it would cost in Southampton.

According to the VW website, the ‘entry level’ Golf S, which comes in three and five door versions, is priced ‘from £18,765’.

The data shows similar variations in the price of the Nissan Qashqai 1.3. The most expensive location to purchase this model is Oxford (£24,750), while same model can be acquired for as little as £17,128 in Belfast, £18,015 in Plymouth and £18,052 in Wakefield, West Yorkshire.

Anyone in Leeds looking to buy the Golf can save £2,831.79 by travelling the few miles to nearby Wakefield, where it will cost £18,000.

Mareike Mueller, eCommerce and brand manager at Ixplor, said the variations show ‘the discriminative pricing practices of car salespeople in each region of the UK’.
