MBC calls for abolition of Mersey Tunnel tolls

Wirral Metropolitan Borough Council has agreed to push for the abolition of all Mersey Tunnel tolls, following the recent 10p increase to £1.40 (Surveyor, 7 February).

A motion to the council seeking to remove tolls and replace them with government cash to pay off the tunnel’s debts attracted all-party support. The move would see the tunnel become part of the national road network.

The council said the tunnels were vital to Wirral’s economy. Councillors noted the efforts of Mersey Tunnel Users’ Association which suggested a scheme, such as that in use in Dartford Tunnel, where local residents received discounts, should be the first step towards total abolition.

Such a move would need the support of Merseyside Passenger Transport Authority, which is made up of authorities across the county, which may have other priorities.
