London Tube explosion treated as terrorist incident

 

The Metropolitan Police have confirmed that the explosion on a train at a London Underground station on Friday morning (15 September) in which several people were injured is being treated as terrorism.

The explosion took place at Parsons Green station at approximately 8.15 am. Transport for London said that the District Line was suspended between Earls Court and Wimbledon and that there were road closures in the area.

In a statement, the police said that deputy assistant commissioner Neil Basu, the senior national coordinator for counter terrorism, had declared it a terrorist incident.

It said: ‘Officers from the Met and British Transport Police attended the scene, along with colleagues from the London Fire Brigade and London Ambulance Service.

‘At present we are aware of a number of people who have suffered injuries.’

The London Ambulance Service said taken 18 people to hospital, none of whom were thought to be in a serious or life-threatening condition .

London mayor Sadiq Khan said: ‘Our city utterly condemns the hideous individuals who attempt to use terror to harm us and destroy our way of life.

‘As London has proven again and again, we will never be intimidated or defeated by terrorism.

‘I am in close contact with the Metropolitan Police, Transport for London, Government and other emergency services who are responding at the scene and leading the investigation. I will be attending the emergency COBRA meeting in Whitehall this afternoon with the Prime Minister.’
