New lollipop sticks with in-built video cameras are being introduced in the London Borough of Hillingdon to help combat intimidating driving.
The cameras will record incidents such as revving engines, driving around the school cross patrol when people are crossing, swearing, and other abusive behaviour. The council has purchased three sticks which will be rotated around the borough.
Cllr Keith Burrows, Hillingdon’s cabinet member for planning and transportation, said: ‘Motorists who don’t stop are putting the lives of children, parents and our patrols in danger. We hope the new technology will prove an effective deterrent to help stamp this out.’
Last year, there were 1,400 incidents of abuse against school cross patrols across the country.
