Loads of moves to cut freight traffic

A new initiative was launched this week in an effort to improve reliability and movement for freight vehicles in central London.
The Central London Freight Quality Partnership (CLFQP) is made up of seven London authorities, Transport for London (TfL), Central London Partnership (CLP) and the freight industry.
CLFQP aims to reduce freight vehicle movements by optimising delivery routes, and using the right vehicle for the right job. It will also investigate other options for freight movements, such as using consolidation centres, encouraging a modal shift to rail or river, and urging the use of new technologies to reduce impacts of air pollution and noise levels.
Other aims include benefiting business through cost savings, more reliable deliveries, and reduced numbers of accidents or near-misses.
Lorries and vans make up 23% of all vehicle movement in the central London congestion zone, according to Michael Browne, chairman of CLFQP and professor of logistics at the University of Westminster.
‘Over the next 10 years, the population of London is anticipated to increase by a further 800,000, and estimates show there’ll be a 15% increase of freight on the network,’ he added.
Guest speaker at the launch, Christophe Ripert, head of urban goods transport for the City of Paris, outlined work the French capital had done to improve freight movement. This includes timed bans on vehicles over a certain size and on polluting vehicles, governing night deliveries by noise regulation, and encouraging a modal shift from roads to waterways.
The London authorities involved are: City of London Corporation; the London Boroughs of Camden, Islington, Southwark, and Lambeth; Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea; and Westminster City Council. Membership of CLFQP is free of charge.
