Key link will give Wakefield area the right connections

A key new road connecting Wakefield, Barnsley and surrounding areas to the trunk road network has been given the go ahead, with £22.8M of government funding.

The final stretch of the Dearne Towns Link, a five-mile stretch of single carriageway running from the Hemsworth bypass to the A1 at Barnsdale Bar, will divert through traffic away from urban areas and on to the link road.

Announcing the scheme, transport minister, Rosie Winterton, said the scheme would help alleviate safety problems in the villages surrounding south-east Wakefield, and encourage local redevelopment.

Wakefield Council will pay the remainder of the total £24M cost. Work is due to start early next year, with the road planned to open in 2009.
