Northern Powerhouse wins £556m local growth cash

 

Ministers have given details of £556m Local Growth Fund cash for the Northern Powerhouse, including money for an intermodal terminal at Goole and flood resilience measures in Yorkshire.

The funding was originally announced in the Autumn Statement but new details were released as part of a Cabinet visit to the North West to mark the launch of the industrial strategy green paper.

The money will be channelled through the 11 Local Enterprise Partnerships (LEPs) in the Northern Powerhouse region.

Projects funded by the new cash include the Goole Intermodal Terminal, which will bring the Humberside town’s existing rail, sea, motorway and inland waterway links into one site, providing an integrated transport facility.

There will also be funds for flood resilience measures in Bradford, Calderdale, Craven, Kirklees and Leeds, ‘to complement existing government investment and help safeguard over 11,000 jobs and 1,300 businesses’.

Other projects funded include a conference centre and hotel at Blackpool’s Winter Gardens; £10m for the Greater Manchester and Cheshire Life Sciences Fund; and the International Advanced Manufacturing Park in Sunderland and South Tyneside - helping to creating an estimated 5,200 jobs.

  • York, North Yorkshire, East Riding £23.7m
  • Lancashire £69.8m
  • Humber £27.9m
  • Leeds City Region £67.5m
  • Liverpool City Region £72.0m
  • Greater Manchester £130.1m
  • Sheffield City Region £37.8m
  • Cheshire and Warrington £43.3m
