Exclusive: Highways England to get interactive in 2018

Highways England plans to develop an interactive map in 2018 to show the location of all schemes delivered under its designated funds.

There are currently five designated funds to support:

  • Growth and housing
  • Environment
  • Cycling, safety and integration
  • Innovation
  • Air quality

However these areas are set to change in the second Road Investment Strategy from 2020-2025.

The news comes after Transport Network questioned Highways England about releasing a list of safety schemes.

Highways England has the target of ensuring 90% of travel on strategic road network (SRN) is on 3 star rated roads for safety under the iRAP modelling system, and the majority of 1 and 2 star roads are brought up to a 3 star rating by the end of the RIS (2020).

Highways England has modelled the entire SRN using the iRAP system and has a list of schemes in preparation to meet this target.

Operations director (acting) at Highways England, Mike Wilson, told Transport Network: ‘We have worked on a designation process for the star rating for our roads, which we have done. And actually our designated funds activity is focused on upgrading those lower standard roads.

'We will be comfortable to share what we are doing to improve those lower rated roads, which tend to be single carriageways, which actually have a higher risk to road users. There is no secret involved and we are confident that by the end of the RIS we will achieve the target that has been set. There is a list of schemes.'

A Highways England spokeswoman told Transport Network that the formal list is 'still going through internal governance' but added that in 2018 the government-owned would start building an interactive map that shows where schemes paid for through designated funds are located.
