Councils battle new year floods

Local authorities in the north west of England are continuing to work around the clock following floods on New Year’s Day.

Teams from Stockport MBC have been evacuating homes at Meadow Mill, where hundreds of people were stranded after floodwater deluged the block of flats.

The council said water levels had receded enough for vulnerable residents to be moved to safety.

Staff have also been monitoring flooding on roads in the area, many of which are still closed.

Council leader Mark Hunter said: ‘Our priority is ensuring the safety and well-being of residents during this challenging time.

‘Teams are working around the clock alongside emergency services to assist those affected and to clear roads as quickly as possible.'

Wigan MBC was also severely affected, with some areas hit by power outages.

Leader David Molyneux thanked staff who had ‘worked tirelessly over the last 24 hours to respond to flooding incidents across the borough'.

Warrington BC was called upon to provide emergency accommodation and support for dozens of people rescued from their homes by emergency services.

Properties threatened by flooding in Manchester were also evacuated by the city council, including 500 people from the Britannia Hotel in West Didsbury.
