Committee names Dunwoody successor

The transport select committee has unanimously appointed Louise Ellman as its new chair.

The 62-year-old MP for Liverpool Riverside has been a member of the committee since her election in 1997. The move came after the sudden death of her formidable predecessor, Gwyneth Dunwoody (Surveyor, 24 April 2008).

Ellman said: ‘I look forward to continuing the committee’s work, holding the Government to account and improving transport.’ The appointment was welcomed by transport groups, including pteg and the CSS.

‘We believe it is important to have a chair who has a strong interest in transport and is willing to ask challenging questions of all who appear before the committee,’ said Brian Smith, vice-president of CSS.

Jonathan Bray, assistant director of pteg, said: ‘Transport is never far from the headlines and we are sure that under Ellman the committee will continue to be both an influential and effective advocate for sensible and progressive transport policies.’ Jim Fitzpatrick, road safety minister, said that Dunwoody would be ‘a difficult act to follow’.
