£150m highways contract under scrutiny

A £150m road maintenance contract in Wiltshire could be ended three years early following complaints from the local authority that the work had not been ‘as effective as had been anticipated’.

Balfour Beatty Living Places (BBLP) was contracted by Wiltshire Council in 2013 to take over highways services including winter service, street lighting and pothole repairs.

Council members have raised serious concerns about the state of the work, which has also been the subject of a scrutiny committee review.

In a joint statement the client and provider said: ‘Wiltshire Council and Balfour Beatty are working towards a solution for ongoing delivery of the highway maintenance contract in Wiltshire. Constructive discussions are on-going and we will provide an update when appropriate.'
