Zero collection scheme will put residents to the test

Households in Bath and North East Somerset are being challenged to complete a week without producing any waste.
Bath and North East Somerset Council has declared this week (23-29 October) Zero Waste Week to encourage residents not to produce black bag rubbish for seven days. As such, households can only use items which can be recycled, reused or composted – and not thrown away.
In 2001, Bath & North East Somerset Council became the first local authority in the UK to adopt a zero waste pledge, with a long-term vision to eliminate waste altogether, rather than simply manage it.
Sarah Raban, Waste Campaigns Officer for the council, said the public response to the initiative had exceeded expectations, with around 75 people signed up. She said she didn’t expect such a response because the scheme ‘is asking a lot from people who are already doing a lot’.
