York lines up debate over tram trains

York could be the next area to trial tram trains, after an initial feasibility study proved positive.

Members of the City of York’s strategy advisory panel voted to support the development of tram-train technology for future rail systems across the city at a meeting this week.

The study, by consultant Arup, considered levels of demand, operational issues, physical feasibility and the cost of converting tracks to tram trains.

The final report showed that a line between York, Harrogate and Leeds would be the most suitable for the introduction of tram-train technology. The extension of tram-train lines into a number of new development sites was also recommended by the study, once certain problems such as road access to stations were ironed out.

The next stage of the process will be for the Leeds City Region to hold discussions with Northern Rail, Network Rail and the Department for Transport, to find out more details about the national tram-train trial which will take place between Huddersfield and Sheffield, which is due to start in late 2010 and last a minimum of two years.

The concept of creating tram-train links will now be included within the overall Leeds City Region Transport Vision.
