Work starts on £12M flood-free link to A49

Work has begun on construction of the £12M Rotherwas access road on the A49 at Grafton in Herefordshire.
The two-mile road will provide a flood-free link between the Rotherwas Industrial Estate and the A49 and includes a new overbridge for Hoarwithy Road.
Contractors Alfred McAlpine Project Services will be supervised by Owen Williams on behalf of Herefordshire County Council and Advantage West Midlands, which is funding the project.
The scheme includes a range of environmental measures from tree and hedgerow removal and replanting to general landscaping, bunding and stream realignment.
Brian Wilcox, Herefordshire’s cabinet member for highways, said the much overdue project marks a major step forward for the county’s Rotherwas Futures strategy to expand the industrial estate. ‘The start of work on this important road signals a milestone in the development of the site as the county’s prime industrial estate and will be a catalyst for future development.’
The scheme is expected to be complete by next spring. Ken Davies, from the firm KGD Industrial Services on the estate, said he had been waiting 29 years for the road so it could transport 85 tonne loads from the site.
