Worcester dream for riverfront is back on stream

Plans to renovate Worcester’s waterfront are back on, after the original £25M scheme failed to win National Lottery funding.
A scaled-down version of the project has been included in the council’s capital spending programme for 2007/08-2011/12, on the back of overwhelming public support for the principle of rejuvenating the waterfront. The council has earmarked £1M to enhance the ‘southern loop’ of the riverside, with plans to install new signage, seating and CCTV, improved lighting and landscaping, and a range of general environmental improvements. It hopes to begin work on the scheme in 2008/09.
Council leader, Simon Geraghty, said: ‘The River Severn is an incredible asset to the city but we haven’t always made the most of it. I’m committed to making sure we maximise this under-utilised asset in future.’ He added that the city council was also in discussion with the county council and the developers at Diglis Basin – Taylor Woodrow and the Berkley Group – about the possibility of a new footbridge being constructed at Diglis. But this is separate from the other riverside initiatives.
