Winter gritting review will spread its reach

The review ordered by the Government into February’s road grtting difficulties will consider how and where councils spread salt, as well as supply problems.

The review, to be carried out by the roads liaison group, ordered by transport secretary, Geoff Hoon, as predicted by Surveyor two weeks ago, will consider the effectiveness and resilience of the supply chain.

Hammersmith & Fulham ran out of snow on 2 February, as snow continued to fall, and Gloucestershire resorted to buying 500t of table salt.

But the review, to report in July, will also examine ‘the operational policies and practice of local highway authorities, and advise on whether changes should be made to codes of practice on highway maintenance’.

The County Surveyors’ Society issued temporary guidance in February replacing the code suggesting reducing spread rates, and using alternative materials on minor roads.
