The Tory-run council said it is ‘going against the grain of other local authorities’ by freeing up more space for motorists, ‘who had spent years illegally parking on double yellow lines outside their own homes under the previous Liberal Democrat administration’.
In the first phase of the project 100 parking spaces will be freed up, with the potential to add more later.
The scheme will cost £900,000 in the first year, and will complement £1.5M for improved road surfaces and £750,000 for improved streetlighting voted through at last week’s budget meeting.
Cllr
Tom Bursnall said: ‘It’s about time councils woke up and though about the needs of motorists.’
