Wiltshire County Council has signed a 25-year energy-from-waste deal to turn 50,000t of rubbish a year into electricity.
Starting in 2008, the deal will cover the Salisbury area and see waste sent to a new EfW plant near Slough. Marlborough-based Hills Group will deliver the waste.
Tom Sturgis, cabinet member for planning and waste, said: ‘The contract is part of the council’s long-term strategy which pledges to boost the proportion of the county’s waste that is recycled or converted into energy, and massively cut the amount buried in landfill.’ He said Wiltshire residents currently recycled almost 39% of their household rubbish.
The EfW plan, currently under construction, will be operated by Lakeside Energy from Waste Limited, a joint venture between Grundon Waste Management and Viridor Waste Management.
