Wide smiles as M1 lanes finally open

A £300M project to widen a 10-mile stretch of the M1 to four lanes was opened last week by transport secretary, Geoff Hoon.

Four lanes in both directions between the M25 and Luton are now open to traffic after almost three years of works. Geoff Hoon said: ‘The opening of this widened section marks a major step forward in our commitment to increase capacity on the busiest sections of motorways and trunk roads.’

During the project, which was contracted to Balfour Beatty Skanska, seven bridges were demolished and rebuilt, and a further 10 were widened. A total of 60,700 trees and 120,000 shrubs were planted.

Other works saw the construction of new parallel roads between junctions 7 and 8 to cater for local traffic travelling between Hemel Hempstead and St Albans.
