Wide open spaces give Southampton a taste of the Continent

A £1.5M shared-space scheme designed for the benefit of public transport-users, pedestrians and cyclists was launched in Southampton last week.

The refurbishment of London Road has seen the widening of footways to make the area more pedestrian-friendly and boost the Continental café feel of the road.

The highway itself has been narrowed and designed to reduce traffic speeds through visual clues, including the minimal use of traditional signs and road markings.

Pedestrian crossing points have been introduced throughout the scheme, as well as new pedestrian maps, unique artist-designed seating, improved lighting and safer parking bays. The scheme forms just one segment of a route, about one mile long, being redesigned and reworked to link Southampton with its waterfront.
