Wholesale and retail firms produce most waste, claims survey

New figures reveal Scottish businesses produce around 9Mt of waste annually, with the wholesale and retail sector the worst offenders.
A survey commissioned by the Scottish Environment Protection Agency (SEPA) found more than two-thirds of waste produced by business came from commerce, and less than one-third from industry.
The wholesale and retail trade produced the most waste, followed by the hotel and restaurant sector. The survey questioned commercial and industrial waste producers on their waste-management practices in 2004.
Only half of companies surveyed knew how all their waste was managed, while three-quarters of respondents said their waste could be recycled but was not.
