Whitehall to axe 1,000 local authority targets

The prospect of highways performance indicators being scrapped was opened up this week, as the chancellor announced that 1,000 local authority targets would be axed.

The current 1,200 performance indicators which councils have to report to Whitehall on will be reduced to just 198 under a streamlining to ‘deliver greater flexibility for local government’. There will also be a 30% reduction in the amount of data that town halls have to provide ministers.

The proposals heightened highways engineer concerns that performance indicators on road condition would be removed, reducing the incentive for local and national politicians to spend money on maintenance.

The Department for Communities and Local Government was due to unveil the detailed proposals as Surveyor went to press.
