Wheelie bin shortage throws London council

A shortage of wheelie bins across Europe has led one London council to ask residents to share bins until new stock arrives in November.

Lewisham council has sited a fire at a major wheelie bin production plant in France, where most of the stock was destroyed, and an increasing demand in the market for the lack of supplies in the UK.

The shortage is affecting both domestic, black wheelie bins, as well as green recycling ones.

Councillor Susan Wise, cabinet member for customer services, said: ‘Unfortunately, the shortage of bins is affecting the whole of the UK, and not just Lewisham.’

A delivery is expected in November, and in the interim, the council is distributing clear plastic recycling sacks, which should be left out for recycling collection in the usual way.
