Weston takes a different view over height of sea wall

North Somerset council has dismissed an Environment Agency recommendation that a £16M flood-defence wall planned for Weston-Super-Mare’s promenade is three feet higher than planned.
The council said it did not want to raise the height of the 1-1.5m wall over concerns it would impact on views, thereby potentially affecting local tourism. However, Rachel Lewis, project’s leader, said the council’s position would not jeopardise EA funding for the sea defence, and was confident of receiving planning consent in mid-December.
Final grant approval is expected in January, with construction set to begin in May 2007. Lewes said the 2.3km-wall would protect against a one-in-200-year storm.
