Westminster has rogue drivers literally in its sights

Rogue drivers in central London are the targets of two new hi-tech smart cars. Westminster City Council has started to deploy the vehicles in London to monitor road safety problem areas.
After a trial run last year showed a marked improvement in traffic flow, due to a reduction in contraventions and consequential changes in drivers’ actions, the authority has decided to make the scheme permanent.
The smart cars can enforce moving traffic contraventions through CCTV installed on a periscope emerging from the roof of the cars.
Initially, the smart cars will enforce only single yellow line contraventions, but Westminster plans to expand its remit to include banned turns, traffic direction signs and other violations.
Danny Chalkley, cabinet member for economic development and transportation, said: ‘We have had a number of complaints of illegal parking around schools, which is potentially very dangerous.’
