West Sussex road upgrades plug gaps in network

A bid for funding to improve the A27 and A24 has been given a boost, after they were recommended for inclusion in the Government’s road-building programme for 2011 to 2016.
Two parts of the West Sussex County Council project, the A27 Chichester bypass improvements, as well as plans to close 28 gaps on the A24 between Ashington and Southwater and build three new junctions, will both be scrutinised by the Regional Transport Board next week.
The board will also be asked to approve the development of a coastal Expressway bus service between Portsmouth and Brighton in the 2011 to 2016 programme. The expressway is linked to a cordon-charge scheme aimed at cutting down on congestion.
The Government has set the programme up to 2011 in stone, so 2011 to 2016 is the earliest these schemes can be programmed in for.
The council has also been told an A27 bypass for Arundel is being recommended for an early start in the national roads programme for 2016 to 2026, together with a major improvement scheme for the section of the A24 between Horsham and Capel in Surrey – a scheme promoted jointly by West Sussex and Surrey County Councils.
