Welsh unveil £2M trunk road centre

Construction work has been completed on a new £2.1M state-of-the-art traffic-management centre in North Wales.

The North Wales Traffic Management Centre, at Morfa, near Conwy, will house all agencies responsible for trunk roads in North Wales.

Work will now start on finishing the building and integrating the communication system into the new operation control room.

It is expected to become fully functional by February 2009. The centre will house staff from the Welsh Assembly Government, North Wales Trunk Road Agency and maintenance contractors.

Facilities will also be available for the police, fire and rescue, and ambulance services to use the centre for emergency incidents.

Transport minister, Ieuan Wyn Jones, said: ‘Ensuring a safe and efficient flow of traffic on the trunk roads is a vital part of the transport infrastructure, and this will be of great social and economic benefit to the whole of North Wales.’

He said its design had benefited from the experience of the South Wales Traffic Management Centre, which opened in Coryton in 2004.
