Welsh recycling’s on a high - but not in the valleys

 
Recycling rates in Wales have reached 41%, up from 26% three years earlier.

Provisional statistics show the proportion of municipal waste recycled, reused and composted was 41% in the three months to June.

The total amount of waste produced has been steadily decreasing – from 467,000t in April to June 2006, to 427,000t in the same period this year. The amount of residual waste produced per person has fallen from 109kgs in the first financial quarter of 2006, to 77kgs this year.

Denbighshire was the highest-performing local authority in terms of recycling (54%). This has increased from 34% in just one year.

Rural councils have generally had the highest recycling/composting rate for the April to June quarter over the last four years, while valley local authorities had the lowest.
