Welsh granted new powers to safeguard school travel

New law-making powers are being used to improve safety on school transport in Wales.

Deputy first minister, Ieuan Wyn Jones, laid the draft of the Learner Travel (Wales) Measure before the assembly government this week.

The measures aim to tackle unacceptable behaviour while travelling to and from school, after Jones acknowledged it had led to ‘tragic results’. Guidelines have also been laid down for councils on checks on drivers, use of CCTV cameras and the employment of escorts.

Jones has also urged councils to stop using double-deck buses for travel to and from schools. ‘Through extensive consultation, I am aware of widespread concern regarding bus regulation and safety issues, which at present, we cannot fully tackle because of constraints on assembly law-making power,’ said Jones.
