Welsh full of pride over landfill target

 
Local authorities in Wales have achieved their 2010 targets to reduce the amount of waste sent to landfill, 12 months early.


The results published by the Environment Agency Wales revealed that councils were collectively currently 16% below next year’s Landfill Directive target. In 2010, Wales will have to report to the EU on its Landfill Directive target performance.


Environment minister, Jane Davidson, said: ‘Every Welsh local authority has now met this first EU target a year early. This is an excellent achievement and I congratulate all of them for all their hard work.


Over the course of the past two years, the Welsh Assembly Government provided local authorities with an extra £24m to prepare for the collection and treatment of household waste. Food waste collection services are now being operated by 18 of Wales’ 22
