The Welsh Freight Strategy consultation has been launched to promote an efficient and environmentally sustainable freight transport system in Wales.

The consultation was produced by the Welsh Freight Group, a body set up to inform the Welsh Assembly Government on ways of developing a sustainable freight infrastructure in the principality.

The aim of the consultation is to provide a Freight Strategy that will deliver a modern, efficient freight transport system in keeping with the aims and objectives of ‘One Wales’, additionally, a Strategy, which will support and balance economic, social and environmental objectives.

Launching the consultation, Ieuan Wyn Jones, minister for the economy and transport, said: ‘The aim of the Wales Freight Strategy is to promote an efficient, effective and environmentally sustainable freight transport system to support a growing economy. ‘Effective transport links are critical in ensuring the successful movement of freight and a modern and vibrant freight network is essential in making Wales an attractive place to do business.’

The Freight Transport Association policy manager for Wales, Ian Gallagher, said: ‘We welcome the Ministers announcement today and look forward to forging closer ties with the Assembly Government and planners right across the country to help build on this ground breaking document.'
