Cardiff Council is the first local authority in Wales to launch a bike hire scheme.
Based on the Paris Velib model, 70 specially-branded bikes will be located at 35 docking stations located at key points around Cardiff city centre and Cardiff Bay.
Users can pay an annual £18 registration fee or apply for a weekly registration fee of £5. After that, the first 30 minutes of hire are free, with each additional hour charged extra.
The scheme is run by OYBike and sponsored by the council and the Welsh Assembly Government through the sustainable travel city project.
Similar schemes in England have been introduced in Bristol, Southport and Blackpool (Surveyor, 18 September), and London is set to launch the UK’s biggest next summer.
A spokesman for Cycling England said each scheme was tailored to the particular area – for example, Southport’s was targeted towards visitors and Bristol’s wholly towards commuters.
