Welsh-English link ‘will cut congestion’

A £61M scheme to cut congestion and improve safety at a key gateway between England and Wales has been completed.

Highways Agency chief, Graham Dalton, unveiled a plaque at the opening of the A5117. The new, three-mile road cuts out congestion from the A550, A540 and M56 junctions.

Dalton said he was delighted the crucial link between the two countries had been improved substantially to make journeys safer and more reliable.

Transport minister, Andrew Adonis, said: ‘Road-users are already seeing the benefits of removing three bottleneck junctions. As well as reducing delays and improving road safety, the improvements will help boost economic regeneration by improving access between England and Wales.’

Work on the road began in October 2006, and received some funding from the Welsh Assembly and the European Union.
