Website traffic service is more a miss than a hit

Transport for London is planning a major review of its online traffic information services, following negative responses from recent user surveys, its traffic information manager told ITS UK’s 2008 annual conference this week.

Helen Cansick said respondents, including taxi and van drivers and school-running parents, registered ‘surprising’ levels of map illiteracy when presented with familiar routes. Many wanted filters based on routes or areas of specific interest to them, rather than the presentation of all available information.

Another issue raised was the absence of guidance extending beyond the M25, for drivers making longer journeys.

Currently, 5% say they would switch to public transport in response to easily-accessible traffic information – making a potentially-massive impact on TfL’s modal shift policy, said Cansick – while 38% would delay, postpone or abandon a proposed road journey.
