Waving goodbye to old-style payments

Westminster City Council is to trial ‘wave-and-pay’ technology at parking terminals across central London.

The technology will enable motorists to pay for parking by swiping a credit or debit card across a magnetic reader attached to the parking machine. It is the first time the technology will be used in the borough.

The council will trial the technology for three months next year across 20 pay-and-display machines in the West End, which will be fitted with wave-and-pay card readers. If successful, the scheme could be expanded across Westminster.

Danny Chalkley, Westminster’s cabinet member for city management, said: ‘We think this new way of parking has the potential to be the model for the future because it is so easy and convenient to use.’

Southampton City Council also plans to implement the scheme next spring.
