Watchman gives fair warning to speeding motorists

Manchester is trialling the Watchman traffic calming system, which focuses on warning bad drivers rather than penalising them.
Funded by the Department for Transport’s Neighbourhood Road Safety Initiative, the system is based around effective signage, speed monitoring, number plate capture and reporting.
Manchester will trial the system on two of its key roads in the east of the city, following the example of a number of other local authorities in the region, including Bolton, Oldham and Salford.
‘The Watchman system is a positive way of changing the bad habits of speeding motorists without causing resentment,’ said Watchman MD Jim Barnard.
‘Most drivers respond positively, and persistent offenders can be identified and tackled in a targeted way.’
