Waste plant plans take root

Milton Keynes and Northamptonshire councils have started the procurement process for their 28-year PFI-funded joint waste treatment project.

The councils received £138M in PFI funding from DEFRA in November, which will go towards the development of waste-treatment infrastructure to deal with the 400,000t a year of waste that will be created in the two areas by 2035.

Both councils will decided during the process on the final choice for the sites and technology to be used for building the plant. They have previously expressed their opposition to mass-burn incineration, while three sites have been identified as possibilities. The new facilities are planned to be up and running by September 2013.
